Gingivitis is the early stage of gum disease. It is an infection or inflammation of the gums. One of its most common symptoms is bleeding gums.

Periodontitis is a more advanced disease of the gum tissues, which may include loss of the bone surrounding the roots of teeth. This could lead to the development of periodontal pockets, tooth mobility and, if left untreated, possibly even tooth loss.
